Florida Striders Track Club

The Florida Striders Track Club is a nonprofit running club for people who love to run. Open for all ages, the club does just what it says: They run all over town.

There are many perks to becoming a member of the club, as it offers training experience and coaching advice from experienced runners and members, discounts on all the races the club has, free T-shirts for new members and even college scholarships for graduating seniors around town.

To qualify for the college scholarship, a senior must be a resident of North Florida for the past two years, must be graduating and must be a runner or active in track and field events.

For more on how to become a member of the Florida Striders Club and to learn about upcoming races, call 777-6108.

On the First Tee

The First Tee Program on the Northside is starting its annual sports programming leagues, which coincide with the Duval County Public School academic calendar. All sessions run Sept. 13 through Nov. 29.

The sessions in Fall 2008, which offers Beginner, Par, Birdie and Eagle certification classes, help golfers become more aware of the sport and create a good atmosphere for the game of golf.

All beginners are required to take a four-week class before moving into the next level of Par. The Saturday programming will start with the Beginners Level from 8-9 a.m.; Par Level I & Parent Class from 9:15-10:30 a.m.; Birdie Level from 10:45-11:45 a.m. and the Eagle Level from 10:45-11:45 a.m.

The semester membership fee is $50 and the annual membership fee is $80. Any Beginners fee is $25, and before any youth moves onto the Par Level, a $50 fee will be due for the remaining weeks of the semester.

For more information regarding the different levels of competition or to become a member of the First Tee community, call 924-0401.

YMCA training programs

The YMCA in Riverside has started a new training program for kids 7 to 18. The program has: Level 1 (ages 7-12) and Level 2 (ages 13-18).

In Level 1 the youths will learn proper speed mechanics and coordination through pylometrics and general strength training.

In Level 2 they will improve the basics learned in Level 1 and add agility, balance and overall athletic performance to the mix.

The days for training are every Tuesday and Thursday in the afternoon. Level 1 will train from 3:30-4:30 p.m. and 4:30-5:30 p.m. Level 2 will train from 5:30-7 p.m. and will be located in the gym, outside or in the group training studio.

Class sizes are from four to 10 youths, and prices range from $70 (one hour twice a week) to $90 (11/2 hours twice a week) for members and $140 to $180 for nonmembers. For more information on the training program, call 355-1436.
