A lot of skaters skate rails, but you might not know there are two different types.

Whether it is a handrail or a flat rail, they both are usually round or flat. There are a lot of round and flat rails in our area. Some round rails are the silver rail at Kona Skatepark in Arlington and the JU 8 rail at Jacksonville University. Some flat rails are the double set rail at Kona, and every rail at Treaty skate park in St. Johns County.

Personally, I like flat rails - except for when I want to do a front feeble. Here are some thoughts from other skaters around town:

Justin Lewis, 20, likes flat bars because "they're not as scary for 50-50s, and that's all I do."

On the other hand, Colin Sperry, 16, of Fleming Island High School, likes round rails because he said you can tweak your tricks more and they allow an easy lock-in.

David French, 17, of St. Augustine High School, likes flat rails more.

"With most of my tricks and how I skate, it's a whole lot easier to lock in and hold with a flatbar," he said.

Sal Butorac, 15, of Orange Park High, said he gets gnar on either one.

Good times at Free Flow

I was on Kona's Web site the other day and happened to see the results of the Free Flow Tour, sponsored by Mountain Dew.

Unfortunately I didn't go because for some reason I thought you had to be an am to skate the event. Judging from the pictures on the site, it looks like it would have been a really fun time.

People were doing some really crazy stuff. Timmy Knuth did a gap to noseblunt, according to the site. I have no idea what he would do it on, but no matter what, that is crazy.

Winners of the 12-and-under division were Blaine Partridge, first; Devin Bagnoli, second; and Grady Smith, third. Winners of the 18-and-under division were Timmy Knuth, first; Paul Hart, second; and Evan Mirschel, third.
